Since Halloween is just around the corner, I’ve decided to put together a list of my past favorite spooky reads, books I’m currently reading, and books on my Halloween TBR. These books range from middle-grade to adult and have minimal to max gore and ghosties. I absolutely LOVE scary stories, so I’m so excited to share some with you. Spooktacular Past Favs 🎃
Black Sheep by Alexa Harlowe and Brynne Weaver (A)
Notes:
This book was absolutely spectacular! It’s not scary, but it’s definitely got some gory elements. This dark romance will definitely keep you up reading till your black flame candle goes out. The spice is superb and so, so hot. You’ll also get so attached to the main characters and get all the feels. These authors dole out some serious emotional damage. There’s also a list of content warnings here, so be sure to check that out if needed, since this is a dark read.

The Haunted by Danielle Vega (YA)

Basically just go read anything by this author. She writes the goriest YA books I’ve ever read in my life, so if you have a thing for blood and exorcisms, be sure to check out any book by her.
Synopsis:
Hendricks Becker-O’Malley is new in town, and she’s bringing baggage with her. With a dark and wild past, Hendricks doesn’t think the small town her parents moved her to has much to offer her in terms of excitement. She plans on laying low, but when she’s suddenly welcomed into the popular crowd at school, things don’t go as expected.
Hendricks learns from her new friends that the fixer-upper her parents are so excited about is notorious in town. Local legend says it’s haunted. Hendricks doesn’t believe it. Until she’s forced to. Blood-curdling screams erupt from the basement, her little brother wakes up covered in scratches, and something, or someone pushes her dad down the stairs. With help from the mysterious boy next door, Hendricks makes it her mission to take down the ghosts . . . if they don’t take her first.
Scritch Scratch by Lindsay Currie (MG)
Synopsis:
A ghost story about a malevolent spirit, an unlucky girl, and a haunting mystery that will tie the two together.
Claire has absolutely no interest in the paranormal. She’s a scientist, which is why she can’t think of anything worse than having to help out her dad on one of his ghost-themed Chicago bus tours. She thinks she’s made it through when she sees a boy with a sad face and dark eyes at the back of the bus. There’s something off about his presence, especially because when she checks at the end of the tour…he’s gone.
Claire tries to brush it off, she must be imagining things, letting her dad’s ghost stories get the best of her. But then the scratching starts. Voices whisper to her in the dark. The number 396 appears everywhere she turns. And the boy with the dark eyes starts following her.
Claire is being haunted. The boy from the bus wants something...and Claire needs to find out what before it’s too late.
The Companion by Katie Alender (YA)

This book was so disturbing. The ending omg. I couldn’t put this book down it was so good.
Synopsis:

Clare at Sixteen by Don Roff (YA-NA)
Notes:
Absolutely LOVED this book! Clare is just such an interesting character and I couldn’t put this down. There are also lots of dark topics in this book like child pornography, sex trafficking, gore, and sexual assault, so just keep that in mind if you’re looking to add this to your TBR. I’m so excited because his new book, Clare at Seventeen just released and I can’t wait to get a copy!

Campfire by Shawn Sarles (YA)
Synopsis:

Small Spaces by Katherine Arden (MG)

I loved this series. It recently ended, so you can now binge the entire series! Yay! This is quite a spooky book for middle graders, so if you have a kid who loves horror, I’m sure they’ll love this book!
Synopsis:
After suffering a tragic loss, eleven-year-old Ollie only finds solace in books. So when she happens upon a crazed woman at the river threatening to throw a book into the water, Ollie doesn't think—she just acts, stealing the book and running away. As she begins to read the slender volume, Ollie discovers a chilling story about a girl named Beth, the two brothers who both loved her, and a peculiar deal made with "the smiling man," a sinister specter who grants your most tightly held wish, but only for the ultimate price.

Notes:
This book was adapted into a movie last year and boy was it a good one! This story is so imaginative and I loved all the short stories Alex tells the witch. It’s a perfect amount of scary and there’s also a sequel!

This book gave me nightmares as a child. Need I say more?
Synopsis:
