Got (Fruit) Milk?
Hey foodies!
I’m sure you’ve all heard of the various nut milks out in the market, but have you tried fruit milk yet? I really love the Binggrae strawberry milk from our Korean grocery store, but I wanted to drink something that was made out of more natural ingredients and decided to try making my own. This led to me trying out a few other fruit milks made from nectarines, bananas, and watermelon. I was pleasantly surprised with how yummy these were and I decided to dedicate a blog post to the recipes. All of these recipes are extremely easy to make and are great refreshing drinks for summer! Granted, half of these are essentially smoothies since you use a blender, but indulge me 😂 If you guys have any other ideas for fruits I should try, let me know down in the comments 😄
Banana Milk
I hate eating bananas plain, but for some reason I love them in smoothies; my favourite being the “Chunky Monkey.” I used this recipe here (not a recipe for Chunky Monkey lol) and it turned out really well! All you need is a banana, milk, water, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. You mix everything in a blender and enjoy! Depending on how milky you want the drink to be, you’ll adjust the ratio of water to milk. I used all milk and no water because I wanted mine to be more creamy. You can also use whatever sweetener you like, but I like the flavour you get from the maple syrup. Finally, you just need a small drop of vanilla extract to add more flavour. I refrigerated my banana milk for a few hours before I drank it so that it would be extra cold. I would make it in the morning and put it in the fridge to chill until I left for work. If you blend your smoothie with some water, be sure to drink it sooner rather than later, because I tried leaving it in the fridge for half a day and it separated and wasn’t as good.
Strawberry Milk
I tried making strawberry milk before where the recipe said I had to boil sugar and strawberries to make a sugar syrup. It didn’t have a strong strawberry flavour and boiling the sugar and strawberries took some time, so I wasn’t a huge fan of that recipe. With this recipe you can make the syrup just by mixing 2 ingredients and leaving them in the fridge. All you need is milk, sugar, and strawberries. You cut up the strawberries into tiny pieces, or you can puree them, or do a mix of both. Then you add in some sugar—you can adjust the amount based on how sweet you want the syrup to be. You mix the sugar and strawberries together, cover the bowl, and let the mixture chill in the fridge for a couple hours. Once it turns syrupy, just add some of the strawberry mixture to a cup of milk, stir, and enjoy! Again, you can choose your sweetness level by adjusting how much strawberry mixture you put into the milk. I love all my drinks very sweet so I usually mix in a couple tbsp. I love making this drink because it just looks so pretty (before you mix it) and tastes delicious! There are some recipes that use coconut milk instead of regular milk, so you could try that as well. If it’s good, let me know in the comments!
Nectarine Milk
This recipe was a fluke. I had just made the strawberry milk and I was wondering if I could use the same method using other fruits. I originally made this with a peach, but I tried making it with a nectarine (pictured here) and I loved it just the same. Just like the strawberry recipe, you just cut up the peach or nectarine into super tiny pieces or puree it, mix it with sugar, and let it sit covered in the fridge for a couple hours. Then you add that mixture to milk, mix it, and enjoy! It tastes so creamy and fruity and delicious!
Watermelon Milk
I have to say, I didn’t like this milk as much as I thought I would. I used this recipe here to make it. This is basically just watermelon, milk, and sugar blended together. You can add your own amounts of each ingredient based on your preferences. I didn’t like this because there’s so much foam after you blend it and the foam didn’t taste good at all. Once you got past all the foam, the milk was pretty yummy and refreshing, but I would probably let it chill in the fridge for a bit before drinking it. Also when I was looking for the recipe I used to include it in this post, I found this other recipe here which I recommend you try instead of the first one. This absolute genius of a human strains her watermelon milk after blending it to get rid of all the foam. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that, but that’s genius so you should just do that when you make this drink! If I ever try watermelon milk again, I will definitely be straining out all that yucky foam 😂
That’s a wrap for all the milks I made! Which one of these are you most likely to try? Don’t forget to suggest in the comment section any other fruit milks you’d like me to try making. If you make any of these drinks, post a pic on Instagram and tag me @nessas.lair so I can see 😊
Happy sipping 😄
